KW Cares

Back in 2022 we introduced the Keller Williams Family to Daniel Rivera Vazquez, and shared the story of how he received “The Heart He was Meant to Have.”

Grants aren’t a “one-and-done” situation with KW Cares. If you continue to need help and continue to meet qualifications, we continue to care. It really is that simple. So when Daniel came to us again for help after his heart transplant failed, we jumped into action.

“On December 2, 2024, I received my 2nd heart transplant, allowing me to have a 3rd chance in life. My first heart transplant was on January 2, 2022, and KW Cares also stepped up and helped our family. We are forever grateful.”

Finding a Heart

Finding a donor that’s a match is always incredibly challenging, and sometimes the donor organ comes from a person with health issues of their own. In Danial’s case, the heart he was gifted came with a small caveat – the donor was positive for Hepatitis C. He began an expensive, 12-week Hepatitis C treatment just in case of transmission from the donated tissue.

Long-term heart failure often comes with a host of other issues. Daniel is having quite a few setbacks with things like sugar levels (he now has to use insulin), magnesium and iron deficiency, and several hospitalizations from surgery-related complications.

In addition, since the retransplant is higher risk, his recovery will take longer than the previous transplant. He will be out of work for 9-12 months. His wife is his primary caregiver, and she is taking off work to take him to his multiple weekly doctor visits. All of these factors have led to a significant financial strain.

“It is such a relief to know that you have an extended family like KW that would do the impossible to make sure that my family and I are taken care of. This grant has helped us in such a way that we are grateful to KW for always stepping up and assisting us in the middle of our crisis.”

How You Help through KW Cares

KW Cares was able to provide financial assistance to help cover the medical and living expenses Daniel faced after his second heart transplant. When you’re part of Keller Williams, you’re part of a family. And family takes care of its own, as often as necessary.
