Zachary Royal has been an agent at the Ballantyne Area, SC, Market Center since July 2023. He’s fairly new to real estate and works as a server to supplement his income while building his business, and enjoys rockin’ out.
On December 10, 2024, Zach went to the ER when the severe abdominal pain he was experiencing became too much to ignore. He’s a younger guy, so he assumed it was something like gas pains or a kidney stone. But it was much more serious.
The Diagnosis
Zach had diverticulitis with a perforated colon. He was hospitalized for 10 days to receive IV antibiotics and to drain accumulated abdominal fluid.
“I have never been really sick before in my life and was not prepared for what happened to me. When I went to the hospital, I was immediately admitted and told I had Diverticulitis and it had gotten infected and ruptured.”
His doctor told him he would need partial colon resection surgery to prevent future diverticulum perforation, but he needed to heal for 6-8 weeks before having the operation. On February 19, 2025, Zach went back to the hospital and had 14cm of his colon removed, followed by three weeks of recovery.
Where Things Are Now
Thankfully, he is feeling much better post-surgery and has returned to the restaurant and to Keller Williams. Zach has relied on family to assist him with living expenses and bills for the past three months since he was unable to work during his recovery.
Unfortunately, Zach did not have medical insurance in December 2024 when he first went to the hospital. Thankfully, he was able to sign up for insurance prior to having surgery in February 2025.
“I was not able to work for most of December and again for half of February from the surgery, where they removed 10 inches of my colon. I was handed $130,000 in medical bills from just the incident in December and thought I was going to be in a hole I could not dig out of.“
KW Cares was able to provide Zach with a Catastrophic Hardship Grant, so he can pay off a portion of his medical bills.
