Dave Conners has been an agent with the Scottsdale Southwest Market Center in Arizona for 17 years. He is married to Angela, a hospice RN, and his Team Leader calls him “a staple in our northern Arizona market”.

In early January 2025, Dave started feeling run down. Given the time of year and many others having what was going around, he just assumed it was the flu. But he kept getting worse, so his wife, a nurse, encouraged him to head to the ER. They couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

In late February, still with no answers, Dave packed his bags and headed to the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. He was there for 30 days.

Getting an Answer

The doctors at Mayo finally diagnosed Dave with acute lymphoblastic leukemia Ph+. This has required multiple cycles of chemotherapy, and he may need a stem-cell/bone marrow transplant down the road. He is currently on a schedule of receiving 1 week of inpatient chemo and 2 weeks of outpatient treatment. Treatment wipes him out, so it has been very difficult for him to work since his diagnosis.

Unfortunately, Dave did not have health insurance when he went to the ER or to the Mayo Clinic for diagnosis and chemo treatments. They do not provide self-pay discounts unless patients are able to pay in full for their services, which he was unable to do. Thankfully, he has acquired health coverage that began on 5/1/25, but his total out-of-pocket medical bills are well over $300,000.
